Telling the Truth About the Blue Dog Democrats

Think President Obama had a 60-vote majority in the Senate that was spoiled by the election of Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts? Think again. Aside from ‘Independent’ (McCain Republican) Joe Lieberman, there are ten die-hard ‘ConservaDem’ Blue Dog Democrats, as well as another five senators who tend toward Blue Doggerel. That means progressives would have had trouble getting even fifty votes on any important reform legislation. Read on, especially below the fold:

Ever drop a beer glass and then cut yourself? Long after shatterproof automobile windshields were introduced, the government of Great Britain seems to be the first to actively encourage, indeed demand, the redesign of the beer glass. But this isn’t just to prevent clumsy patrons, or bar staff, from spreading shards all over the floor where others might walk. According to the CBC there have been 87,000 incidents in pubs: Wales and England; glassware intentionally smashed and then used as a weapon.

For much of the Bush-Cheney era, Republican leaders characterized themselves as more than just allies of the military establishment, but also deferential to the military’s judgment on national security matters. “Listen to the commanders on the ground” became a common adage in GOP circles.

But over the last year or so, it’s become increasingly apparent that it’s President Obama and his team that are aligned with the military establishment, leaving Republicans at odds with the brass they used to revere.

Patriot Act – Eight Years Later

After 2009 – a year when federal prosecutors charged more suspects with terrorism than in any year since the attacks of September 11, 2001 – and in today’s atmosphere of heightened fear triggered by the aborted plot to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day, Congress will begin again this month to consider reauthorization of key parts of the USA Patriot Act.

The act was passed by a frightened Congress, with very little debate, just 45 days after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the hijacked airliner that crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Only one US senator – Democrat Russ Feingold of Wisconsin – voted against the legislation.
